He’d never done something like that before.  Tiny specs of dirt masquerading as sand erupted into the air behind his heel. The half finished can of Diet Coke spilled out and seeped into the beach as the bottle of Jack Daniel’s demonstrated surprising sturdiness in bouncing off the birch log, rolling to a stop only when butting up to the grapefruit sized rocks Candace had plopped in a circle.

Blood filled Harold’s hand before he was even aware of what was happening, such was the speed of Steve.  Years later, Harold would hate himself for not reacting quicker; every time he saw the scar from the first fall, the one left behind her left ear, he blamed himself, not Steve.  Steve was just an animal.
